You get a phone call that changes your life: your child or a relative’s child has been in a car accident. He has been taken to the hospital, but is unable to move his legs. Many times, having as much knowledge as possible on a medical topic better prepares you to talk to medical professionals. This is why we will dig deeper into learning about our body systems. In this discussion you will explore spinal cord injuries and their prognoses. You will need to conduct research and document your evidence.
You should spend approximately 4 hours on this assignment.
Instructions
Read the letter posted in your Exploration materials. Then, consider the following prompts:
Describe the process of nerve healing in peripheral nerves and the difference between central and peripheral nerves.
Explain how the nervous system grows with us and how that supports its function.
Suggest a reason why most neurons are amitotic.
Explain why neurons very rarely become cancerous.
Express how the symptoms mentioned in the letter demonstrate the connection between anatomy and physiology, based on injury location.
Provide insight into new research, perhaps with stem cells, and describe why specific new research may, or may not, be the answer to cure these injuries.
Discuss why a medical professional should never guarantee an outcome with a nervous tissue injury.
Search for, read, and summarize your answers to the questions using 1-2 journal articles, one book chapter, and/or two websites.
You can conduct research through the CCCOnline Library. If you go to the Library’s Research and Database resource page and select “Biology” from the Research Database Filters, you will see the many resources pertaining to biology to which the Library has access. Also, you can explore the curated resources that have been prepared specifically for the biology classes.
After researching the discussion topics, share with your classmates what you learned by writing an informational post responding to the questions (minimum of 300 words). Your initial post must include two sources cited in APA Style. Need help with APA? Please refer to the CCCOnline APA Citation Toolkit.
