Guidelines:
Summary: What is the point of this source? What topics are covered? What are
the main arguments/ideas/evidence? If someone asked what this source is about,
what would you say? The length of the source will determine how detailed and
how long your summary is. Remember that a summary is about 1/3 the length
of the original text.
b. Assessment: After summarizing the source, evaluate it. Is it a useful source?
Why/why not? How does it compare with other sources in your bibliography? Is
the information reliable? Is it this source biased or objective? How do you know?
Questions to ask when assessing sources to be included in an annotated
bibliography
i. What type of audience is the author of the source addressing? Is the publication
aimed at a specialized or a general audience? Is this source too basic, too
technical, too complex, or just right for your needs?
ii. Is the information covered fact, opinion, or propaganda? Facts can be verified;
opinions (which may be based on factual information) develop from the analysis
of facts. Experienced writers can make you think their interpretations are facts,
so read carefully and critically!
iii. Is the article up to date?
iv. Is the information well-researched, or is it unsupported by evidence?
v. What are the credentials of the author(s)? Is the author an expert in the
filed/topic? Is the author’s point of view objective and impartial? Is the
language free of emotion-arousing words and bias? Is the article well written?
Are there any errors or inaccurate facts in the article?
vi. What type of academic journal published the article? Is it a reliable one? How
do you know? Is it peer-reviewed*?
