Known as the “mother of family therapy,” Virginia Satir believed in helping people and families reach their full potential by building their self-esteem, sense of safety, and capacity for healthy communication. Her humanistic approach utilized the therapist’s authenticity as a therapeutic tool to encourage increased client awareness through powerful mind/body/emotional work using gestalt, role-playing and other experiential techniques.
Review the Iceberg Exercise handout (attached). Review Iceberg Self-Discovery Exercise and reflect on each question. (See “The Iceberg” video on how to complete this activity.)
1. Reflect on the self-discoveries and summarize a response to each of the following:
what you learned about yourself;
how this knowledge can support your personal growth; and
how it can help prepare you for social work professional practice with families.
