Assignment Introduction and Overview
The Selfie
Who doesn’t like taking pictures of themselves? Go explore the world and find an object that looks like a quadratic. Take a digital selfie with it! If you are camera-shy, bring your favorite stuffed animal along and hold it in the picture (show some of your hand). You can review the resource on the graphs of quadratic functions here.
Find the Equation
To find the equation of the quadratic, upload the photo to your computer. Go to www.desmos.com and use this online graphing calculator. This calculator provides the space to experiment with different equations to find just the right fit. Upload the picture onto a Desmos graph (see screenshots below with further directions). Center the picture at the origin. Now the fun part! Experiment with different equations until you find just the right one.
Project
When just the right equation has been identified, save the image to submit with your reflection (see screenshots below for further directions). Be sure to include the equation you obtained from Desmos.
Reflection
In a paragraph or two, describe where the picture was taken, include fun details, and why you took this picture. Also, describe the process of finding the equation. What did you learn about the leading coefficient? Which form of a quadratic equation did you choose to use and why? What is the relationship to the parent function?
Then, write a paragraph analyzing the function. What are the intercepts (if there are any)? What is the vertex? Which direction does it open? What is the domain of the quadratic (the shape is probably not infinite)? What is the range?
Include any other details that you think would help others appreciate your work of art!
