This assignment is designed to give you hands on experience with different listening techniques. You will choose ONE of the observations/experiments listed below to perform and write about. You will need to be familiar with the listening concepts from the text and from the course content we have covered. You will turn in a one-page synopsis/response to your experiment/observation uploaded to canvas
Observations/Experiments
1.Observe the “cocktail” listening effect at a gathering of two or more
people. The cocktail listening effect is when someone is talking to one person but trying to listen to something else (Example: watching television and talking to someone). What do you see happening? For this exercise, please be an observer…don’t be one of the people involved…you won’t be able to properly observe if you are involved.
2.Ask only questions for a full ten minutes and avoid being drawn into the conversation. Record the reactions of the other person. Did they enjoy the experience? Did you have difficulty not being drawn in to the conversation?
3.Give only positive attending behaviors (nodding, smiling etc.) and positive verbalfeedback: (“Yes, I understand” ,“I agree” etc.) to someone for five minutes. Observe their behavior. Did they talk more, less? Did the conversation continue, stop? What was their reaction?
4.Select a good friend and use your active listening skills. Resist giving advice. Didyou succeed in using all of the skills? Was the transaction useful to the friend? Was it difficult for you to not give advice?

Identify a problem in your workplace and present a solution to a supervisor.
First, have a detailed description of the problem including causes and effects.
Then clearly explain your solution and why it is a good idea, including consideration of cost/benefit. Use enough detail to communicate the idea(s) of your solution clearly and completely. Your email must delegate responsibilities to specific people or positions/roles in the business so everyone knows exactly what you think needs to happen and who will be responsible for what.
Ex: “The snow must be cleared off of the front steps.” is insufficient because it does not identify specific people or a time frame.
The more detail you put in your memo the better it should be. I do not work where you work so if I can understand exactly what you are talking about then you are doing a good job.
Your solution CAN NOT be hire more people or spend more money on something. If your solution is to hire more people or spend more money you will fail the assignment with a grade of zero. You can suggest something that has a cost, but a solution like “We need to hire x more people” will not be counted.

This assignment is a Persuasive presentation. You must propose a change to an existing rule, law, behavior, etc., or you can propose something totally new. Examples include the introduction of a VAT in the US, a new course that WPU should offer, and why college athletes should/should not be paid (that one has been settled). You need to propose something that is enforceable and measurable — not something like, “people need to stop cursing so much” or “people need to be nicer on public transportation.” For this presentation you can choose a business, academic, or social topic. Local issues can still be an interesting source of ideas; what’s going on in your town or county? This is not a lengthy research project, but you might want to do some basic search/research to get some facts. You do not need to cite sources unless it helps you: ex. The American Medical associates says… (something that supports you).

Observe any natural setting for about 15 minutes (no less than 10, not more than 30) and take ‘field notes’ (see Creswell Chapter 7) about what you’re observing.
Indicate these observations in a narrative, although you may include tables, figures, or even pictures/images from your research. If you are taking notes by hand, you can include your notes as an appendix (take a picture of the page(s) and insert those images into your Word document).
In your paper, indicate the details about your setting and what you’re observing, as well as possible themes or patterns that you would be interested in following up on if you were going to develop a future research study about this particular topic.
