Discovering Science Lab
Lab 5: Healthier You
Throughout history a number of scientists have been so eager to test their hypotheses, they
have even tested out on themselves to find the answers the sought. Some have even gone to
extremes: Scientists who Experimented on Themselves. If you just read that, fear not… I will
not ask you to smear yourself with potentially infected feces here, I promise!
What I would like you to do, is test how your body reacts to proper nutrition and care.
For this week I would like you to run an experiment on your own body.
Choose a healthy change that you feel you can
try out for the week.
Here are some examples:
 Increase water intake: Drink 8 – 8 oz glasses of water each day.
 Cut out fast food
 Increase vegetables/fruit in your diet (try to double at least)
 Stop a bad habit (drinking, smoking, etc)
 Increase exercise
 Don’t like those ideas? Check out these sites for more:

Record and Observe!
 Do this new behavior for three days in a row
 Record how you feel, respond, react at least 5 times in each day
 Include details, even if you feel they might be “unseemly” (If you drink more water, you
will need to void that water more often, after all!)
Follow the Sample Lab Format to record your data and observations!

Discussion: Science in Action
Were you surprised to hear about how biology and chemistry relate to your own body and health?
Now that you know more about how science plays a role in your health, what are you going to do about it?
Do you think that you can not due to time, availability, money?
Check out this video to see how Stanford has developed an App to help people change their environment to help everyone lead healthier lives:https://youtu.be/NizygCD1X2o
This App is just for specific projects, but there are certain apps you can use to track your health and get healthier today.  Check out these Apps:

Are you using any of these?
Would you consider using any of them?
Why or why not?
One last thing to consider is the health of what you are already doing.  Hopefully, everyone here is drinking their eight glasses of water each day.  If not, you should do that for your Lab 5 project!  Each of you should also consider how healthy your water is.  Before reading this article, write down the kind of water you drink (tap, filtered, bottled) most often and whether you feel it is the healthiest option.  Then Read this article:
