Critical Thinking Assignment: Choose one of the Options below
Option #1: In our chapter on remembering and forgetting, the author cites several different types of information that reside in memory. Episodic memories are composed of particular events that happen to someone personally. Semantic memories are essentially “general knowledge”. Procedural memory is our knowledge about how to do things, like ride a bike. Think about these three types of memory and how you use each on an everyday basis, listing a few examples of each taken from every day experience. In what kind of situation is each kind of memory most important? What would you still be able to do without each kind of memory? Your answers to these questions should be explained thoroughly.
Option #2: Although our sensory systems generally do a good job informing us about what’s going on in the world, there are situations where our perception does not match reality. Sometimes, people act on the basis of flawed perceptions, and the results aren’t always good. For this option, write about a situation in which a perceptual error caused an interesting (i.e. sad or funny) result. Be sure to address the following: (a) clearly describe the scenario, and the behavioral result, (b) identify relevant sensory and perceptual processes and the source of the error (c) discuss what (if anything) could have been done to correct the error, or avoid the “interesting” result. Note: This paper option should be about sensory and perceptual processing, not about opinions, beliefs, or impressions, etc. Please review the chapter on Sensation and Perception from Module 3 if you need a reminder about what Sensation and Perception refers to.
Compose your paper in MS Word or a compatible word processing program. Your paper should be 1 or 2 pages in length, single spaced, standard margins, 12 point font. There should be a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. The standards for writing assignments apply. Cite all outside sources clearly using your preferred format.
