Before typing your content, you should review the entire template to be sure you understand what is required.
The purpose of this template is to provide you with a few major building blocks that can be incorporated into your final paper. In the sections provided below, you will insert your approved thesis statement, you will begin building the foundation for the body of your paper.
1. Thesis Statement
Insert a thesis statement that is supported by all three major sections of the paper.
The remainder of this form will help you begin working on what will become the first two major sections of your final paper – the analysis and the critique of the worldview you are writing about.
The basic outline for your final paper should follow this structure:
I. Introduction
II. Analysis of Aspects of the Opposing Worldview
III. Critique of Aspects of the Opposing Worldview
IV. Defense of Christianity
V. Conclusion
In what follows, you will be crafting the building blocks that will eventually become sections I, II and III in the outline.
2. Analysis of Aspects of the Opposing Worldview
This section will form the building blocks of what will become the first major section in the body of your final paper (section II in the outline above): Summarize the worldview by using aspects of its presuppositions and beliefs using one sentence per bullet point (revision and/or expansion of these bullet points is required in the next stage of the project). The number of bullet points needed will be determined by your approach to this topic and the quality of your research but at least two are required.
• Bullet point 1:
• Bullet point 2:
• Bullet point 3:
• Etc.
3. Critique of Aspects of the Opposing Worldview
This section is focused on helping you build what will become the second major section of the body of your final paper (section III in the outline above): Evaluate aspects of your selected worldview described in the previous section in order to show where it fails to provide a rational, livable, comprehensive system.
• Bullet point 1:
• Bullet point 2:
• Bullet point 3:
• Etc.
4. Defense of Christianity
This section is focused on helping you build what will become the second major section of the body of your final paper (section IV in the outline above): Demonstrate that Christianity is a superior worldview using the critiques above in order to reveal the significant ways in which it has advantages over the selected worldview in providing a rational, livable, comprehensive system.
• Bullet point 1:
• Bullet point 2:
• Bullet point 3:
• Etc.
SELF-SELECTED APOLOGETICS ARGUMENT: THESIS AND OUTLINE ASSIGNMENT INSTRUCTIONS
OVERVIEW
In order to defend orthodox Christianity against an aspect of a worldview that casts doubt on the truth, rationality, or livability of Christianity, it is helpful to analyze and critique the pertinent beliefs and the presuppositions of the worldview. Analysis entails an understanding of the actual worldview as understood by those who hold that worldview. Critique or evaluation looks at the analysis of the beliefs and presuppositions of the worldview and determines if those beliefs hold up to the expectations of logic and applicability to life. Both of these skills contribute to an effective apologetic. At that point one can construct the defense. All three of these components must support the thesis of the paper.
INSTRUCTIONS
A template will be used for this assignment. The Self-selected Apologetics Argument: Thesis and Outline Template is in four sections. Total new content inserted into this template will range from 200 to 500 words. No title page is necessary.
1. Thesis Statement Construct and insert a thesis statement supported by all three major sections of the paper. If the thesis statement needs adjusting based on instructor feedback, you must make the adjustment. Contact your instructor if you need help constructing a thesis statement. This statement must be clearly expressed in one (1) complete sentence of 30 words or less.
2. Analysis
a. Formulate in this section pertinent aspects of the worldview by using the presuppositions and beliefs of the worldview. Present your formulations of the worldview aspects in bullet points that are one sentence long each.
b. You will formulate the pertinent presuppositions and beliefs of the worldview based on research but avoid direct and indirect quotes. This should be in your own words. While a bibliography is not required at this point, you should have at least 2-3 scholarly sources that are representative of the worldview that you are researching. These probably have carried over from your annotated bibliography.
c. Your thesis must be supported by the content and organization of this section.
3. Critique
a. Critique the worldview using specific evaluative criteria in order to reveal the significant ways in which the selected worldview fails in providing a rational, livable, comprehensive system. At this stage present your evaluation of the worldview in bullet points that are one sentence long each.
b. You will formulate your critique based on research while avoiding direct and indirect quotes. For this section use 2-3 sources in addition to the Bible and the textbooks that were not used as support in the analysis section. However, no bibliography is required at this point.
c. Your thesis must be supported by the content and organization of this section.
4. Defense
a. Demonstrate that Christianity is a superior worldview using specific evaluative criteria in order to reveal the significant ways in which it has advantages over the selected worldview in providing a rational, livable, comprehensive system. At this stage present your defense of the worldview in bullet points that are one sentence long each.
b. You will formulate your defense based on research while avoiding direct and indirect quotes. For this section use 2-3 sources in addition to the Bible and the textbooks that were not used as support in the two previous sections. Again, no bibliography is required at this point.
c. Your thesis must be supported by the content and organization of this section.
