PLEASE ANSWER WITH CORRESPONDING NUMBERS TO THE QUESTION:
1. After reading chapter two (2) in How the Brain Learns Mathematics, document three things you learned about how the young brain learns to calculate.
2. Answer these questions in response to reading chapter two in Now I Get It! After posting your response, be sure to return to review your colleagues ideas. You need to respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts by adding to the conversation in a meaningful way.
In what ways do invented procedures support students’ understanding of numbers and operations?
How can teachers provide repeated, by engaging, practice with basic facts?
What did you take away from the reading that you can apply to your own teaching and learning environment?
3. In Now I Get It!, one of the activities that was suggested for teachers to use with students was to provide an answer and ask students to generate a question or a series of questions (problems). Let’s give it a go… I will provide an answer below and I would like you to provide three (3) different questions or problems. I encourage you to think in different areas of mathematics as you build your questions. Challenge yourself!
The answer is… 75.
4. You have read about procedures and processes as a tool for managing the classroom. Experienced teachers rely on procedures to help with building structure and routine for students. They spend time at the start of the year (or semester) and after each significant break building and revisiting these structures that help the classroom run smoothly.
Take five (5) minutes and brainstorm all of the procedures that you think might be useful or necessary in YOUR classroom. Then, take two of those and flesh out the procedures. Be specific. If you do not clearly know what you want to happen, students will never be able to get there.
5. Now that we have explored the importance of the learning environment on teaching and learning, take a minute to reflect on what you have read and watched.
What do you think are the two most important components that make up a positive classroom/learning environment/setting for students? Why did you choose these two components?
