Discussion 15: Self-Reflections on Nursing Theories
As a nurse, I’ve witnessed firsthand the transformative power of nursing theories in guiding principles, practice, and decision-making. In my experience, certain nursing theories are not just practical, but they have the potential to revolutionize patient care outcomes.
One of the nursing theories that resonates deeply with me in my practice is the Theory of Human Caring by Jean Watson. Watson’s belief in the transformative power of caring has not only shaped my approach to nursing, but it has also fostered a deeper connection with my patients. Applying this theory, I strive to establish a meaningful connection with each patient, understanding their unique needs, and providing holistic care that goes beyond physical symptoms.
Another highly applicable nursing theory is the Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory proposed by Dorothea Orem. This theory advocates for nurses to assess the patient’s capabilities and limitations to develop care plans that promote self-care and independence, improving patient outcomes and overall well-being.
The Transcultural Nursing Theory developed by Madeleine Leininger is a cornerstone in today’s diverse healthcare landscape. This theory underscores the crucial role of cultural competence in nursing practice, emphasizing the need for nurses to understand and respect the cultural beliefs, values, and practices of their patients. By incorporating cultural considerations into care delivery, we can provide more effective and personalized care that respects and aligns with the cultural preferences of our patients.(Leininger, 2020)
The Person-Centered Nursing Theory developed by Tom Kitwood has also significantly shaped my practice. This theory recognizes the personhood of each patient, particularly those with cognitive impairments such as dementia. It advocates treating individuals with respect, dignity, and a sense of value, focusing on their remaining strengths rather than deficits. By adopting a person-centered approach, I have seen firsthand the positive impact it can have on patients’ quality of life and well-being, especially those with complex care needs. (Dudkiewicz,, 2014)
Finally, the Health Promotion Model by Nola Pender has influenced my practice by emphasizing the proactive role of nurses in promoting health and preventing illness. By integrating health promotion strategies into patient care plans, I have witnessed positive changes in patient behaviors and attitudes toward self-care, ultimately leading to better health outcomes.
Nursing theories such as the Theory of Human Caring, Self-Care Deficit Nursing Theory, Transcultural Nursing Theory, Person-Centered Nursing Theory, and Health Promotion Model have significantly influenced my practice. I can provide better care and improve patient outcomes by incorporating these theories into my daily care routines.
