8. Birdland
Among the things that makes Bitches Brew so important is the fact that so many of the band members left those sessions and went on to take jazz fusion in their own directions. Nearly every member of the Bitches Brew band left that experience, took ideas from it, and went on to make waves of their own in the jazz fusion world.
“Sorceress” is a piece by Return To Forever, a band led by Chick Corea (one of the keyboard players during the Bitches Brew sessions).
“Miles Ahead” is a piece by Mahavishnu Orchestra, an ensemble led by John McLaughlin (the guitar player on Bitches Brew).
“Birdland” is a tune by Weather Report. Weather Report included Joe Zawinul (one of the Bitches Brew keyboard players) and Wayne Shorter (who was in both Miles’s “Second Great Quintet” and continued through some of his earliest fusion records [including Bitches Brew]).
Give a general reaction to each of these tracks. What strikes you as you listen to each track?Comment on the instruments you hear in each example. (Or make a guess as to what instruments you hear … as some might be difficult to identify … this is partly the point of jazz fusion.)
Which of these do you feel is closest to what you heard in “Spanish Key” (from Bitches Brew)? Which one seems the furthest from “Spanish Key?”
Which one of these tracks did you personally find the most interesting? Which one do you think is the most “listener friendly?” 6. Sorceress
