The Grammar Lab this week discusses the idea that it is the dominant culture that determines what standard English is and therefore the expected way people are to speak and write in order to be successful in school, work, and life. Standard American English (SAE), however, marginalizes other versions of English that operate with a different set of grammatical rules putting those who use a “non-standard” version of English at a disadvantage. Additionally, you’ve read some articles concerning language and power that may very well concern issues related to SAE. In this discussion, you will share your thoughts on and experience with Standard American English, and you will examine the experiences of your classmates.
