Based
on the job description you developed in your Week 5 assignment, how do
you think simulation exercises would be useful in your selection
process? If you don’t think they’d be useful, why not?
In separate paragraph be sure to respond to at least one of your peers’ posts.
Hello Professor and Classmates,
The textbook defines simulation as “A job-related activity designed
to assess a job candidate’s proficiency and ability to perform specific
job tasks” (Picardi,1). Simulation exercise would be very valuable in
the selection process. It would allow the hiring manager to assess job
skills and see if they are in-line with what the candidate discussed
during the interview. The simulations are hands on and allow the hiring
manager the ability to assess a candidate’s abilities. While the
candidate has not been hired, so they do not have company protocol or
knowledge there are many things that can be determined or skills that
can be assessed on a basic level.
I have participated in simulation exercises both as a candidate and
as part of the hiring process and found it be extremely useful. When I
was in the selection process for communications officer, we had to do
multiple simulation activities. Part of the job function was
multi-tasking, so we they conducted practice sessions to see that we
could do that. Another vital function was obtaining and retaining vital
information such as location or address while the caller was providing
all kinds of information in a very hurried and upset manner. We were
responsible for getting the relevant information correct such as the
physical address. We also had role play scenarios in which we took fake
phone calls to see how we interacted with the caller on the other end.
As the candidate these were all incredibly stressful, but they were also
a glimpse at the job for which I was applying. As part of the
recruitment team, these simulations were very telling and helped to weed
out candidates who did not have the skills needed for the job.
I hope everyone has a great week.
Take Care,
Rianne
