We’ve got big trouble.
One of our buyers, Remy Realtor (RR), was in negotiations to buy property for a new office building. RR was talking with Charlene Cityblock (CC) about buying some downtown real estate. They exchanged numbers, and CC mailed RR a real estate contract that contained numbers to which RR had not agreed. RR misread the document and signed it, mailing it back. However, CC never receives the document.
In another part of the building, Simone Sickly (SS) passed out at work. Paramedics arrived, and her co-worker, Harry Hopeful (HH), signed documents paramedics thrust in his hands. HH didn’t read them. The documents were, again, a contract/promissory note.
In yet another part of the building, Wanda Worker (WW)called an electrician about the power not working in some offices. She called Billy Badguy (BB), who has advertised himself as a licensed electrician. In fact, he is not. He did the work, and WW wrote him a check. BB endorsed the check and negotiated it with Lana Landlord (LL) to pay BB’s apartment rent.
What liability does ABC company have in each of these scenarios? What ethical issues should you bring to the CEO’s attention?
