Observation Project (70 points: observation logs (20 points) + APA Paper (50
points)): You will be observing two subjects (from different age groups:
Newborn/Toddler (0-2); Early Childhood (2-6); Middle Childhood (6-11); Adolescence
(11-18)) throughout the semester. The two subjects that you choose to observe don’t
necessarily have to be the same gender. Your subjects SHOULD NOT BE
IMAGINARY. You will be observing each subject’s development closely (physical, cognitive, social, emotional) and relate your observation to topics and theories that were covered in class. You will keep a log in a journal format for each of your observations. In the journal, you will be writing exactly what you observe (physical appearance, behavior,
mood, interaction with others, …) and relate your observation to topics and theories that
were covered in class (Table provided on Canvas). Each observation period should be
between 30-45 minutes long. There should be a total of 10 observations (5 per subject).
Along with turning in the observation logs, students needs to write a paper (in APA
format) connecting their observations to different theories/concepts based on
physical/cognitive/social/emotional domains. You must describe and define the
theory/concept/topic you are discussing and give specific examples from your
observation to create a clear connection. The paper should be 5-6 pages (excluding cover
page and reference page), 12 font, double space with 1” margins on each side with
correct spelling, grammar and punctuation. The paper must be in APA format including
cover page and reference page (for this paper you do need an abstract page). Guidelines
and instructions will be further discussed later in the semester. Project must be submitted
via turnitin on Canvas before 5:00 pm of the due date (check course calendar for due
date). The textbook is The Development of Children by Lightfoot, Cole, and Cole; Eight Edition;
Worth Publishers; 2018.
I have attached the observation longs, the rubric, theories, and slides for the class. Please do not use any outside sources other than the textbook and the slides attached. The report should reference chapters 8,9,11, and 13. I also began the report with the introductions. Please keep those in the report and follow the format in the google docs attached.
