2 part, NOT a paper: 1-2 paragraphs ONLY for each part PART 1: Good news Resources: 1.) https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Romans+5-8&version=NIV Assignment Instructions In 1-2 paragraphs address the following: Describe the importance of the substitutionary death of Christ (His “blood”) and one’s personal faith in that sacrifice as crucial to persons enjoying the Good Life of restoration with God as seen in the assigned passages. Support this with at least one quotation from scripture. Explain why the terms of justification, sanctification, and adoption are necessary to the enjoyment of the Good Life that Jesus promised in light of how these concepts appear in Romans 5-6 and 8. Introduction and Alignment The catastrophe of the effects of human sin on the universe did not take God by surprise. The plan for the rescue, salvation, and restoration of humanity was that the second person of the Trinity, God the Son, would become human. Jesus, the son of Mary and Joseph, born in Bethlehem, raised in Nazareth, was the one anointed by the Holy Spirit to carry out this role. While human but always still divine, Jesus never sinned. He died for sin, but not His own. He as the Lamb of God was our perfect sacrifice. The power of God His Father raised Him from the dead three days after His crucifixion (Romans 10:9). He visited and was viewed by His disciples and others for 40 days (500 persons at one time; 1 Corinthians 15:3-9), after which He was observed rising in the air and returning to heaven. In reviewing this first passage, we seen that the restoration plan, made possible by the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, resulted in three major restorative aspects: Justification (Romans 5) – the pardoning of sin’s penalty of death and restoration of a relationship to God (reconciliation to and peace with God). Sanctification (Romans 6) – the “new birth” (John 3:3-12), the sharing of Christ’s death to sin’s power over us and of His resurrection power to live a new life. Adoption (Romans 8:14-17) – The welcoming of each believer into the family of God with all of the privileges of being the children of the Father and joint heirs of His Kingdom. In this activity you will explore these terms and reflect on the significance of what Christ did on the cross for you. PART 2: sharing the good news Resources: 1.) https://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?search=Matthew+28%3A18-20&version=NIV Assignment Instructions: In 1-2 paragraphs address the following: Describe three aspects of the Great Commission (Matthew 28:18-20) of every believer in spreading the Good News of the Gospel. Support each characteristic with at least one quotation from Scripture. Describe the undeniable, crucial empowering element to the success of every believer in carrying out the Commission of our Lord to the ends of the earth. Introduction and Alignment Living out Christian faith and life requires that we share God’s gift of grace with others. The very last words of Jesus before He left earth to return to heaven were for his Apostles…to wait. They were to wait (and they did for 10 days) for a promised gift. What they received is the gift given to every believer in Jesus. It is the baptism of the Holy Spirit. Rather than just being with us, He is in us, covering us, cleansing and empowering us, just as we see Him doing to those who waited on the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2, especially verses 1-4). But why this gift? It was certainly to empower us to live in His presence. But, according to Jesus, it was to empower us to take Good News (the Gospel) to the ends of the earth, telling and inviting others also to share in this gift. “Do not leave Jerusalem, but wait for the gift my Father promised, which you have Heard me speak about. For John baptized with water, but in a few days you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit. But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:4-5, 8 NIV). The Christian life is ours by faith in the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the sinless Son of God. This life is certainly something we would want to share with others! Upon completion of this assignment, you should be able to: Discuss the role the Great Commission plays in Christian faith and life.
