1) Do you think teamwork can have negative consequences?
2) What can a leader do when a team lacks synergy and the collective whole is not greater than the sum of individual parts?
There are a number of potential consequences of teamwork. Individuality for one, employees may feel like they are not heard or seen for their work. Also the team may have conflict if one member feels they are working harder than another. There is also the possibility of personality differences and that causing conflict within the team. While teamwork has its place, there are several potential issues that arise from it as well.
There are many things a leader can do to improve overall synergy. Firstly would be team building exercises and retreats. These are intentionally designed to help force teamwork and to learn of other’s strengths and weaknesses. Recognizing and rewarding team successes as a whole will help encourage the members to keep up the good work and boost morale. There are many ways to strengthen a team and how they work together, the leader will just need to find what works best for their team and their company.
