At-Home Short Essay
Instructions: Below, you will see the short essay prompt.
Although I do not have a specific word count/number of sentences I am looking for, on
average, adequate responses have a brief intro, 2 well-developed body paragraphs, and
a brief conclusion. A well-developed paragraph is typically around 10-15 sentences. As
you have about a week to work on this, I expect that your response will be written in
standard English and be free from mechanical and grammatical errors. You should
proofread your response (more than once!) before you submit it.
Be as specific as possible when providing examples and evidence, and use at least 2
primary sources from anywhere in Unit 1 to support your responses. Brief direct
quotations are fine to use, but not required.
Examples of acceptable references:
In Godey’s Lady’s Book’s “The Anniversary Present,” the viewer sees three people: a
man, woman, and child.
The Lowell girls had to be vaccinated (Excerpts of Factory Rules from the Lowell
Handbook, 1848).
Essay Prompt:
What is the relationship between enslaved women’s labor and the work
done by the Lowell girls? How were the work and life experiences of
enslaved Black women different from the work and life experiences of the
Lowell girls?
