Advanced Battle Analysis Methodology (ABAM): Step 1-Answer the four W’s, Step 2- Identify who is fighting this war and what their objectives are overall; identify the campaign of which the battle is a part and what its operational objectives are; briefly summarize the military events leading up to the battle to provide context; describe the weather conditions and the terrain, Step 3-compare opposing forces to identify strengths and weaknesses having the most significant impact on the battle itself, highlight tactical objectives of both sides and how and where the units were deployed across the battle space, Step 4-tell the story of the battle with the opening moves and the details of major phases and decisions, describe the outcome, what were losses of personnel/equipemnt/terrain, what were the immediate and long term impact of battle on the larger campaign or war, Step 5-describe the essential elements of the victory or defeat, discuss historical observations and insights, highlight at leat two key elements that provided better understanding of the military profession and its mission.
