Background
Learning about the rhetorical modes will help you internalize methods of development and patterns of organization for your writing. Using one or more rhetorical modes in your writing will help you fully understand the modes.
Instructions
For this assignment, write a single paragraph that consists of about 150-200 words and responds to one of the following prompts below. The paragraph should use the rhetorical modes of narration and description.
Things to remember:
Narration/Description assignments (While these are two separate strategies, they are typically used together) require chronological order. Since the writing reflects on your own experience, use the past tense and the first-person point of view (I, me, we, us). The descriptive parts appeal to the senses and provide concrete and specific descriptions. Instead of writing that the air smelled good, write about the sweet smell of orange blossoms hanging in the air.
You may review the Rhetorical Strategies unit (Module 2 Learning Materials, Part 3) if needed.
The topic sentence should be the most general sentence. Remember that it serves two purposes: it states the main point of the paragraph, and it limits the paragraph to supporting that main point. Present your topic sentence first. It should be the first sentence that appears in your paragraph.
Prompts:
What is the most difficult thing you’ve had to learn?
When was the last time you were proud of yourself OR disappointed in yourself? (select only one)
What is your most vivid memory of childhood?
