Base the answers off of the NMR and IR spectra provided. I submitted an example of someone else’s work as well, but this NOT THE SAME AS MY DATA. Please follow format and make sure my spectra is annotated correctly. My sample is not pure, so please describe the other peaks. We did the reaction starting cinnamaldehyde FYI. NMR Analysis. Discuss the obtained 1H-NMR data for your product – based on your NMR data, how pure is your compound? Discuss all peaks in the spectrum – splitting patterns, chemical shift values, integration values, and a brief justification for the assignment of each signal (functional groups, EWG vs. EDG, etc). You can combine parts of your discussion for Hs in similar environments (like for aromatic protons), especially if they overlap in your spectrum. If you see peaks for impurities (other compounds than 9-fluorenone), discuss them briefly. Connect your TLC data to your NMR spectra – did your TLC plates indicate a pure or impure substance? How does that compare to your NMR data in regard to purity? Please refer to your NMR checksheet on your postlab assignment for help with annotation and discussion of peaks. Think in the style of claim, evidence, reasoning to help with you discussion! Use the example NMR paragraph provided on Canvas as a guide! IR Analysis
How does the IR prove the cinnamyl alcohol was successfully synthesized? Discuss your IR data – be sure to include all peaks (noted in your table from the post lab) and what functional group they belong to. Does the IR prove full conversion of the starting material to the product? Is there any clear evidence in the IR of leftover starting material? Does your IR data match what you observed in your NMR data and on your TLC plates? Any impurities you observed on your NMR should also be labelled and discussed in the IR data noting obvious key peaks only (except acetone – that came from cleaning your NMR tube). Think in the style of claim, evidence, reasoning to help with you discussion! Conclusions
Start this paragraph with “In conclusion, the reduction of cinnamaldehyde to cinnamyl alcohol was successful/unsuccessful…” “Success” should be related to whether you were able to make your target product as evidenced by the NMR/IR data. Now that you have the full story and spectroscopic evidence, tie all pieces of data together (TLC plate observations, NMR/IR data, yield, appearance) in a few sentences. Thinking back to your Postlab answers and your NMR/IR data, what is the take-home message of this experiment? Were there any major sources of error? What are TWO thoughtful and scientific improvements for this experiment? Remember, human error should NOT be proposed as a major error or area of improvement. Think about the reaction itself and how the chemistry, monitoring by TLC, work-up, and purification could be improved.
