How do I get the most points for this discussion?
Discussions should be 8-12 complete sentences long and reference something that we discussed in the module or something that you looked up online (with the exception of this one which is just to get to know you). Main Discussions are worth 20 points, and replies to discussions are 5 points each. This discussion requires two replies to other students. These replies are worth 5 points each with the option for five extra credit points for an additional reply. For example, if the discussion is worth 20 points and you need two replies, then the initial post is worth 10 points and each reply is worth 5 points each for a total of 20 points. You can then write a third reply to another post in that discussion for an additional 5 points, which would give you 25 out of 20 points for the assignment.
Refer to the syllabus for more information and click on pulldown bar in upper right corner to review Discussion Rubric. Main Discussions are worth 10 points, reply Discussions are the “reply” discussion posts made to another student in the course and are worth 5 points; no points are awarded for late or short Reply discussions. Reply Discussions need to be at least 4 informative sentences.
response 1 zainab :
Food marketing and advertising play a big role in childhood obesity in various ways. Ads for junk food and soft drinks are crafted to make children favor these over healthier options. Kids naturally prefer tasty foods, and when marketing is designed to make certain foods more appealing, it influences their choices. Fast food and quick snacks are often unhealthy, but these ads don’t highlight this important fact to children. Marketing significantly impacts the types of food we choose to eat. Children are often the target of promotions that push unhealthy snacks, shaping their food preferences and eating habits. This can lead to obesity, especially if parents also enjoy junk food or fast food, as they tend to buy these items for the whole family. For instance, McDonald’s and KFC use eye-catching packaging and characters to attract kids, even though these meals are sugary snacks, fast foods, and unhealthy beverages. Children are targeted through TV, print media, social media, and other platforms to catch their interest.
response 2 zeyad :
Ads and marketing associated with food have an important impact on the obesity of children.Unhealthy eating habits have been supported by the overt promotion of high-calorie, low-nutrient foods, particularly through media channels aimed at youngsters. Research indicates that kids are especially exposed to marketing, which can affect their eating patterns, food preferences, and at some point, their weight. The World Health Organization’s (WHO) research on food marketing to children is one study that sheds light on this problem. According to the report, the majority of child-targeted commercials highlight meals that are heavy in sugar, fat, energy, and salt. Children are drawn to these commercials because of their cartoon characters, vivid colors, and catchy jingles, which make them crave unhealthy food. For example, the “McDonald’s Happy Meals” advertising campaign regularly makes use of toys and collaborations According to the report, the majority of child-targeted commercials point out meals that are heavy in sugar, fat, energy, and salt. Children are drawn to these commercials because of their cartoon characters, vivid colors, and catchy jingles, which make them crave unhealthy food And deeply feel in love with they are eating and drinking.

Instructions:
I want you to choose a topic that has something to do with unhoused individuals or homelessness and write an expository essay. I define this very loosely so that you can choose something that is interesting to you. It can be any where in the world, during any time period, and for any reason. Here are some possibilities:
What happens to individuals when they suddenly become homeless due to a natural disaster such as a major fire (Paradise, Maui -Lahaina, etc), tidal wave, hurricane, earth quake, etc.. I want you to choose just one disaster and research it – not do a general expose, but choose a specific event.
What happens/is happening to individuals who become homeless due to a war?
What is happening in your own community about homelessness.
How is the cost of living effecting the uptick in homelessness?
How is the lack of mental health services effecting homelessness?
As I said, these are just examples – I am very flexible as to what you choose to write on.
You must use at least 2 sources, but no more than 3.
One of the sources must come from a data base at Mendocino’s Library. Read the Expository essay pointers page for the instructions on how to access and use the library data bases.
Your essay should be around 700 words, but not more than 1000.
You must use MLA format and include a works cited page.
Please note that you must submit it as a file – in doc, or pdf format.

3 different Essays – Make sure that you reference the Milestones, you need to basically do an extension of the Milestones. Upload 3 separate documents and MLA 9th formatting is critical for title Page, intext citations as well as for the Work Cited Page. Each document will have 6 sources.

In the short story “The Story of an Hour,” author Kate Chopin uses point of view and plot to develop the themes of the story.
In a well-organized essay, show how point of view is important for explaining the reactions and emotions of characters such as Mrs. Mallard, Josephine, and Richards throughout the course of the story.
Structure your essay around a few key points within the story. Begin with a thesis statement and use specific evidence from the story to support that statement. You don’t need to use direct quotes, but do allude to specific images or moments.
Improvements: thesis needs to be more insightful, evidence needs to be better developed, more commentary needed (explain how the evidence supports a line of reasoning and how it all develops an overarching argument), and needs to demonstrate sophistication of thought and/or develop a complex literary argument.

Student response 1 (iman)
Food marketing and advertising play a significant role in contributing to childhood obesity. One notable campaign is the ‘Happy Meal’ marketing by McDonald’s, which targets children with toys and colorful packaging. Studies have shown that such marketing strategies can influence children’s food preferences and increase their consumption of high-calorie, low-nutrient foods. According to a study by the Rudd Center for Food Policy & Obesity, children exposed to food advertising consume more unhealthy snacks. This highlights the need for stricter regulations on food marketing to children to promote healthier eating habits and combat obesity.
Student response 2 (azita)
The pervasive influence of food marketing and advertising on children’s dietary choices contributes significantly to childhood obesity. Advertisers employ tactics like colorful packaging, catchy slogans and strategic product placement to capture young minds, often prioritizing unhealthy options.
Consider the iconic “Tony the Tiger” campaign, which effectively targets children with Frosted Flakes cereal. This campaign exemplifies how marketing shapes preferences for sugary foods.
Research supports this concern. Harris et al. (2009) found food marketing to children significantly contributes to childhood obesity, emphasizing the need for responsible marketing practices.
