Welcome to class! I am your Professor, Cindy Morrin! I have been teaching and counseling for over 25 years. In addition to Cuyamaca, I have taught at high schools and graduate level universities. I got involved in online teaching early in my career and feel it is an excellent way in learning. As a natural introvert, I find online learning a great way for me to learn and teach. However, I believe extroverts love online learning as well.
My career pathway is similar to many but unique to me as well. I come from a low-income family and had a lot of family trouble and trauma occur during my lifetime. My parents were teenage parents and then my step-parents were even closer to my age – more like older siblings. I had to raise myself as all the adults in my life suffered from their own intergenerational trauma and continued to pass it on. I’ve had family members go to prison and others die from drugs and alcohol. What helped me get through my rough childhood experiences was education and resilience and a fight to get out of a system of abuse. I love teaching this class because this is a class I needed as a teenager and young adult starting life and college. I hope you will reflect and journal on your life in this class as you embark on your college and career journey. I hope this class will help you overcome hardships and obstacles you might be facing or may face along your pathway.
I went to SDSU as an undecided major. I first pursued Business and even got a job at a bank. The banking job was a good job while in school and I enjoyed it, but it also made me realize business was not the major for me after all. After taking a leave of absence to try and figure out what I really wanted to do, I ended up changing my major to English and eventually I pursued a teaching credential. I became an English Teacher and then later got my Master’s degree at Point Loma Nazarene University in Counseling. After working in alternative education, the first Charter School in San Diego and as a high school counselor, I eventually found my pathway to Cuyamaca College to work with students like you. I have been at Cuyamaca full-time since 2006 and love the community college system.
I have held jobs since the age of 16 and every single job has helped lead me in my career and a place where I have gained valuable skills. In addition, my jobs are what helped me survive the family dysfunction and get myself in school. This is also an important part of your career journey and I will be recommending and referring you to our career center to explore work-related opportunities such as internships while you are in school.
Above all, I am a mom! I have two amazing adult sons. My oldest is a Music Professor at Berklee College of Music in Boston and my youngest is pursuing his PhD in Mathematics at UC Irvine. Both went to Ivy League schools for undergrad. My youngest actually went to Grossmont Middle College and I got to be his Counselor as he earned his certificate in math/physics/engineering before starting his college. Cuyamaca and Grossmont rock if you are in high school and taking this class!
I am back in school myself! I am pursuing a doctoral degree in Clinical Psychology at the Chicago School of Professional Psychology – San Diego campus. I am doing my research on adverse childhood experiences (ACE’s), parental narcissism, and CPTSD. It is pretty heavy stuff! Whew! But, I love it! I’m very excited to use the skills in the class I teach to continue my learning with all of you!
For fun, I spend lots of time with supportive, healthy friends and colleagues. We love to hike all of San Diego county and eat good food together. I also love yoga, meditation, gardening, creative arts and writing projects. Lastly, I am constantly outdoors, enjoying sunshine and nature!

All the way at the bottom is the feedback I was given.
This is an essay that was written by the same writer with some tweaks. It has been annotated, it is attached as a file. The Comment Sheet is also attached this is what will be used to tell you what need to be fixed, the annotations show numbers, you look at the number than go find it in the Comment Sheet and then make the correction that is it telling you. Also a Strengths and weaknesses paragraph is needed right before the concluding paragraph. A reflection is needed separately after making all of the corrections. Directions for reflection below.
Highlight all corrections
All rewrites should exhibit significant revisions that go beyond the comments that were submitted to you. You should highlight your changes. They should definitely be revised beyond grammatical/mechanical formatting errors and be largely content-based. All rewrites are due as scheduled and should include a one-page reflection that explains the changes you made which addresses the following
1. how you used the comments to help with the changes
2. how you revised beyond grammar
3. a comparison of the first experience vs. the rewrite
4. What you changed and why
5. what you learned from the experience
6. I will not grade rewrites that do not have changes highlighted or are missing the reflection.
The feedback that was given:
This is well-written and thorough. However, you do not cite your source regarding Jeffries’ credentials, which is plagiarism. You also skip your strengths and weaknesses. Fix these two things, and this will be an A.
Good job with creating a clear and focused thesis organization for your introduction and conclusion. Here is what you want to work on if you decide to revise:
Develop a clear thesis that establishes your view of the film and includes your criteria.
Use more supporting examples.
Be sure you credit the source of your information when providing the information regarding the author’s credentials. You must cite when you put information in your own words. That is a big issue impacting your grade, but it is an easy fix.
You are missing your discussion of diversity.
Avoid first and second person pronouns and contractions.

start a Word or Google doc with your planned claim. Then below, paste at least 3 important quotations from each reading (cited) that show where the claim appears or is supported with evidenced. Write a few sentences explaining how they overlap or coincide with each other. I will provide you with two claims, i’d like you to fix the claims as the prof finds it “seem too general. Your choice of micro-hegemony and enoughness works well, but now how can you use that to compose a SHARED claim that will link all 3 of the Gulf readings you will choose” I will provide you with the three reading i chose, all revolving around language, that link back to one main paper which is the Blommaert and Varis(2015) enoughness and light communities paper but read up to chapter 1 nothing after. In addition to that, id like you to add citations from the reading to supoort the main claim and explain why supports the main claim, i will provide you with an example.

Case Study: Help 10-year old Anthony improve his nutrition
Let’s delve deeper into the case of Anthony to better understand his circumstances and challenges. Anthony is a 10-year-old boy who has been struggling with obesity. He comes from a low-income family, and his parents are concerned about his health. Anthony’s parents have sought your help to understand the factors contributing to his condition and to receive guidance on improving his nutrition.
Anthony’s Daily Routine
Anthony’s daily routine provides valuable insights into his lifestyle and habits:
Anthony wakes up at 7:00 AM and quickly gets ready for school.
He usually skips breakfast due to time constraints and heads to the bus stop at 7:30 AM.
School starts at 8:00 AM, and he has a packed lunch from home, typically consisting of a sandwich, chips, and a sugary juice box.
After school, he returns home at 3:30 PM and often spends his free time watching television or playing video games.
Anthony’s family frequently orders fast food or opts for inexpensive, calorie-dense meals for dinner, as cooking fresh and nutritious meals is challenging given their financial constraints.
Bedtime is around 9:00 PM.
Case Study Questions
What are the key factors contributing to childhood obesity, and how do they relate to Anthony’s case, considering his family’s socioeconomic status and his daily routine?
What are the short-term and long-term health consequences of childhood obesity, particularly in relation to nutrition, and how might these impact Anthony’s future given his daily routine?
Given Anthony’s family’s financial constraints and his daily routine, what practical and affordable dietary modifications can they implement to support him in achieving a healthier weight.

Environmental factors play a significant role in the the development of children. The school is a significant environment for children as they spend a lot of their developing time there. The food that is consumed at school, whether from school lunches, food packed from home, or food traded at school influences taste preferences and dietary choices as an adult. In our next module, we will be discussing nutrition, USDA School Meal Guidelines and the importance of these guidelines in promoting healthier choices.Behavior
The effects of any different aspects of behavior affect childhood obesity. In the fourth module, we will be focusing on examining the effects of physical activity (and lack of physical activity) on childhood obesity. Some of the causes of decreased physical activity include increased screen time and increased sedentary behavior. We will also be examining the “Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans” form the U.S Department of Health and Human Services.
