Option #1
Interview someone who has a psychological issue. Be sure to choose someone who has made it clear that they are okay with discussing their issue. Because of the sensitive nature of the interview, please do not include any identifying information, and don’t get too pushy in your questions. Types of information that may be useful include: symptoms, age of onset, types of impairment, perceived causal factors, and any other information that may give you a sense of what it would be like to have that issue. The main goal for this option is to give you a sense of what it would be like to have a psychological problem(s). Report your findings in 1 to 2 double-spaced pages. If you think you can make a diagnosis based on the information you obtained in the interview, you may provide this as well.
Option #2
Imagine you wake up one day, and you’ve suddenly developed a psychological disorder. A note is attached to your chest indicating that you will only experience the disorder for 24 hours. Describe what your experience would be like. How would your day be different? What types of daily activities would be affected and how would they be affected? How would you cope with the symptoms? How would the experience change your perception of psychological disorders? Write a 1-2 double-spaced page response describing your reactions to the experience and how it may affect you afterward.
Option #4
Select a specific type of therapy and describe what it would be like to be a client/patient in this type of therapy. You have some freedom about the things you might discuss including: what the change process would be like in the therapy, perceptions of the therapist in this therapeutic modality, reactions of the client and therapist (e.g. how would they perceive the same events in therapy), or you could compare and contrast 2 different therapies. For this option, you are expected to write a 1-2 double-spaced paper, but the nature of the paper is flexible. You could also write it more in a more creative way such as a poem or short story. No matter how you wish you address the option, be sure to demonstrate that you understand the nature or the type of treatment(s) you select.
Option #5
Creatively express your understanding of a particular psychological disorder. You can express yourself in the form of a poem, song, painting, drawing, short story, photo collage, or other creative format that you believe depicts the psychological disorder of your choice. In addition to providing your creative product, you should also provide a 1-2 double-spaced page description of your creative work. Be sure to include a brief description of the disorder, how your work depicts the disorder, and any other information that you believe will help me understand how you have captured the disorder with your work.
