Directions: Watch a film of your choice and answer the accompanying questions below. Each question is graded collectively on: accuracy or fulfilment of answers; application and comprehension of course material; evaluation and analysis; critical thinking; clarity of writing; and proper academic writing (e.g., proper grammar, APA formatting, etc.). Each question is worth 20 points for a total of 100 points. Your response to each question should be roughly one page, double-spaced, Times New Roman 12-point font (or similar), for a total of 5 pages of written text (e.g., not including a title page or reference list). Do not exceed 5.5 pages of written text. Choose a film that is appropriate for analysis and the work we’ve completed in this course. For example, you will want to choose a film where there is a relational element, be it friendship, marriage, family, etc. While discussion of big topics such as politics, war, social violence, etc. are important, they are not appropriate topics for this assignment as the course was focused on relational aspects of mediation and conflict. Students who chose a movie that does not overlap with the content of the course risk receiving a failing grade. If you are unsure about whether your film is appropriate, please email me to confirm. Some examples of appropriate films include Neighbors (with Rose Bryne and Seth Rogan), The Break Up (Jennifer Aniston and Vince Vaughn), Inside Out (Disney), etc. Submit your assignment via the drop box on Course Link in a Word or PDF document. Please note that other formats oftentimes cannot be opened and you risk receiving a 0 if you do not submit in Word or PDF format. Emailed submissions are not accepted. You can only submit one file and the most recent submission is kept. Please ensure that you are submitting the correct file. Incorrect files (e.g., assignment from another class) risk receiving a 0. 1. Summarize the film, highlighting key themes of conflict and the characters you will be discussing for the remaining questions. Provide your overall evaluation or analysis of the film at the end of your summary. 2. Identify and discuss the conflict styles of two main characters discussed above. Why do you think they have these conflict styles? 3. Identify the ‘expressed struggles’ between the two characters discussed in question 2.)What do you see as the ‘perceived incompatible goals’ and the ‘perceived scarce resources’ of the conflict? What ‘interference’ do you see between or among the parties of conflict? 4 What are some ‘expressed struggles’ some of the characters you mentioned in question 1 have? You should use characters you have not discussed in questions 2 and 3. You should reference at least 2 other characters, but are welcome to discuss up to 4 (though remember quality over quantity). 5. Using the Hocker-Wilmot Conflict Assessment Guide or Difficult Conversation Guide, mediate any one of the conflicts you’ve discussed in the questions. While there may have already been a resolution in the film you watched, you will mediate it on your own using one of the abovementioned guides.
