Located below, you’ll find a PDF document for the introduction to Arnold Pacey’s book Technology: Practice and Culture where he discusses varying relationships with certain cultural groups and their technology. One important thing about this piece of writing is that it challenges our modern day perception of technology (Pacey wrote this book in 1983). For instance, with the wealth of tech at our disposal in the 2020s, we don’t tend to think of water pumps as a form of “technology” but they are. Nowadays, we’re more focused on digital consumer technology as examples of technology: cell phones, autonomous cars, streaming services, social media, etc. As you read this piece of writing, I want you to consider the technology examples Pacey provides, the snowmobile and water hand-pumps for instance, and try and apply those to contemporary modes of technology. What parallels can you make with today’s digital technology? Hopefully this will help you consider your own tech topics in a more complex way.
