Analysis Paper One Prompt
Select and analyze three related examples of wartime propaganda. The examples do not have to be
from the United States, but should come from or relate to a war, from World War I to the present,
in which the United States was a combatant. This may include World War I, World War II, the
Korean Conflict, the War in Vietnam, Gulf Wars I and II, or some aspect of “The War on Terror.”
Explicate a theory of propaganda to analyze these images. This should arise from our readings
including Bernays or Ellul, but you also may use additional sources or produce an original theory
while explaining how it relates to the work of earlier theorists. Your work should engage this
question: what do these examples reveal about propaganda as a discourse of war? You may refine
this further depending on your project: What do these examples show us about French culture at
war? Or, what do these examples show us about the importance of food security in war? Etc.
Note that it is often useful to discuss how examples of propaganda arise from national cultures and
make use of their values or common traits. How are these examples calibrated to work on the
