– Assignment Description
The objective of this assignment is to apply the concept of Belbin project steps to a real-world situation and assess their impact on team effectiveness. By completing this assignment, learners will gain a deeper understanding of the significance of Belbin science to focus on everyone’s strengths. This understanding will be helpful when building high-performance teams and facilitating innovation within the team context.
– Assignment Structure
Step 1: Select a Real-World Team:
Choose a real-world team that you are familiar with or have access to (e.g. your workplace team, a community organization, a sports team, etc.). Ensure that the team has at least three members and is actively engaged in a collaborative project or objective.
Step 2: Analyze the Team’s Building Blocks:
Analyze the building blocks of an effective team based on the content covered in Week 2. Consider factors such as clear roles and responsibilities, effective communication channels, shared values and norms, trust and collaboration, and supportive leadership. Assess how well the team currently embodies these building blocks and identify areas for improvement.
Step 3: Understand Belbin project steps:
Review the Belbin project steps circle from earlier in this week’s content, including the characteristics of each phase and how they contribute to team dynamics. Consider how the different steps can be fulfilled complementarily by different team members and enhance overall team performance.
Step 4: Apply Belbin project steps to the Real-World Team:
Apply the concept of Belbin Team Roles to your selected real-world team. Assign one or two Belbin areas to each team member based on their observed behaviors, strengths, and skills. These should be the areas where each person would feel stronger and would be adding more value to the team. Justify your choices by providing specific examples and evidence from the team’s activities or interactions.
Step 5: Team Innovation Barometer Challenge:
Identify an innovation challenge that the team is currently facing or will face.
Create a team innovation “barometer” to define the capacity of your team to successfully overcome that innovation challenge. This barometer should measure your team’s ability to innovate, considering the team’s strengths in its capacity to innovate as well as the areas in which your team can improve in this capacity.
Reflect on how the assigned Belbin project steps can help mitigate or overcome this challenge. Evaluate the impact of the assigned Belbin areas on the team’s overall effectiveness and innovation potential. Consider how the team’s dynamics have changed, how individuals’ strengths are utilized, and any challenges or opportunities that have arisen as a result of the assigned areas.
– Grading
This is an individual assignment. This assignment will count for 30% of your final grade and will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
1-Thorough analysis of the building blocks of effective teams (30%)
2- Thoughtful application of Belbin project areas to the real-world team (30%)
3- Critical evaluation of the impact on team effectiveness and innovation (30%)
4- Structured organization and clarity of your submission (10%)
