Discussion #1 Respond to post in 250 words minimumIt’s clear what virtues public administrators and persons working within a public field have? Oftentimes it is not clear, or clear that they are lacking in them. Unfortunately, there are many cases where corruption or personal profit takes precedence over ethical decision making when it comes to public administrators and politicians. I think it is very clear what virtues a person working in the public sector should have. Character traits and dispositions such as honesty, integrity and truthfulness will always come up in any discussion involving virtues needed in public service, and rightfully so. If the public cannot place trust in their public servants, then that will become problematic. Take as an example the video in the Unit V study guide. One part of the video shows a Senate hearing involving the State Department’s Inspector General. At issue was the construction of the new United States embassy in Baghdad, Iraq. A Kuwaiti company had won the bid to build the embassy. The bid process involved no competitive bidding and cost overruns ended up costing U.S. taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars. There were many witnessed safety problems and allegations of slave labor conditions at the construction site. The Inspector General failed to follow through on any complaint placed against the construction firm. The video also shows the same Inspector General being exposed lying in front of Congress about another lack of oversight in a separate case involving allegations against a private security firm in which The IG’s own brother held a high position. The U.S. Army Office of Inspector General defines the roll of an IG as follows: “The IG acts as the eyes, ears, voice, and conscience of the commander. The role of the Inspector General and his or her staff is to determine and report on the economy, efficiency, discipline, morale, esprit de corps, readiness, and resources of the command”. Obviously a very important job in which the need for the virtues of honesty, integrity and truthfulness cannot be overestimated. Considering the State Dept. IG reports directly to the Secretary of State, one of the most powerful positions in the Executive Branch of our government, this lack of virtue and plain old corruption is appalling. Corruption of this sort, when exposed, is terribly damaging to the public’s faith in government and ultimately to the reputation of the administration in question. Of course, the example doesn’t have to be so high profile as the one in the video. It can be a simple as a local building inspector getting paid off for “looking the other way” or a mayor using his influence to get city jobs for friends or family without due process in hiring. In closing, the core virtues needed for persons in public service are self-evident, however, many times they are apparently very hard to live up to. It is up to the voters to hold leaders accountable to these virtues and to ultimately elect worthy candidates who will uphold them. References: Moyers, B. (Producer). (2018).
