Discussion 3 – Group 1
PROMPT
Imagine you are a health psychologist working in weight loss clinic. As a health psychologist, you work alongside a team of healthcare professionals (e.g., physicians, nurses, dieticians, physical therapists). While they focus on the physical aspects of weight loss, your role is focusing on the behavioral component.
Today, you are meeting a new client for the first time. Before you meet him, you review the intake form he completed: Client Intake Form pdf attached.
During the meeting with your client, you try to get to know more about his weight loss history. He revealed that when he started jogging, we was able to lose ten pounds, but he did not “stick with it” because he was “too lazy” and jogging was “too intense” for him. You work together to identify a target behavior to change, and he decides he would like to increase the number of steps he takes in a day. Currently, he is averaging about 5,000 steps per day. He decides a realistic goal is to achieve 7,500 steps per day. This can be achieved through walking, which will be less strenuous than jogging. You wish to learn more about his motivation for change, so you assign him homework to complete before his next appointment.
A week later at his next appointment, he brings in his completed homework, and you review. Client Homework.pdf attached.
After reviewing the materials above, please answer the following questions. Be sure to use evidence from the intake form and homework form to support your answers.
What stage of change is this client in?
Does the client believe he can make change?
Does the client believe the pros of losing weight outweigh the cons?
Does the target behavior align with the client’s values?
You believe he could benefit from improving his motivation to change. Please choose an evidence-based strategy, either listed in the course materials or from your own investigation, and find a research article that describes the efficacy of this strategy. Answer the questions below and be sure to reference the study.
What strategy for increasing motivation for change was used in the study? Please describe.
Summarize the results of the study. Do the results suggest this strategy is effective at increasing motivation to change? How?
