Primary Care NP Role Versus Other APN Roles The primary care nurse practitioner role and other advanced practicing nurse roles are similar in many ways, although they also have many differences. An advanced practicing nurse (APN) is a master’s prepared nurse with extensive knowledge, vital critical thinking skills, and the clinical expertise required for advanced practice. There are two widely recognized APN roles: the nurse practitioner and the clinical nurse specialist (Jokiniemi et al., 2023). The nurse practitioner role and the clinical specialist role both have important duties, and each is equally as important. Both positions play a crucial role in the healthcare setting, as their work is imperative to creating a better system for all, with prioritization to their patients. Although the nurse practitioner and clinical nurse specialist have different responsibilities, the two roles share some similarities. Both roles require the APN to receive a master’s degree in nursing and each requires licensure in their specific role and specialty. Also, the nurse practitioner and clinical nurse specialist strive to prioritize disease management and prevention, along with health promotion (DNP, 2021). Nurse practitioners can work in inpatient and outpatient settings. This also applies to the clinical nurse specialists, as they are not limited to only working in one type of setting. The nurse practitioner and clinical nurse specialist have the same goal of providing optimal patient care while trying to enhance the healthcare system. The major difference between the nurse practitioner and the clinical nurse specialist includes the patient care aspect. The nurse practitioner’s role entails assessing, diagnosing, and interpreting laboratory tests, in addition to prescribing medications for patients while collaborating with other medical professionals (Wheeler et al., 2022). The nurse practitioner is considered a front-line worker, as they see patients in acute or primary settings and provide patient-centered care (DNP, 2021). On the contrary, the clinical nurse specialist usually works within healthcare administration. This includes providing guidance to nursing staff and working closely with systems involved in patient care (Wheeler et al., 2022). Clinical nurse specialists are considered the “behind-the-scenes” professionals who study the process of providing care to enhance it and produce the most beneficial patient outcomes. To do so, the clinical nurse specialist aims to use evidence-based research and practices to provide optimal patient care. When explaining these two roles to healthcare providers, it is important to highlight the main differences between the two, and how they contribute to the healthcare system. For example, healthcare providers must understand the nurse practitioner’s role and what falls within their scope of practice. Nurse practitioners work independently and alongside other providers to treat their patients. They are responsible for assessing, diagnosing, managing treatment, and prescribing medications. In addition, nurse practitioners are responsible for coordinating their patients’ care while also providing education regarding health comorbidities, prescription medications, and treatments they provide. However, the clinical nurse specialist is responsible for using evidence-based research to provide the healthcare team with the most up-to-date information in providing quality patient care. Finally, when providing information on these roles to the consumer, it is essential for them to understand what a nurse practitioner is, and how they impact the consumer. The consumer must understand that nurse practitioners can see patients in a primary care setting, in the hospital, in urgent cares, and even in the home. This information is vital to the consumer, as they may not know what the nurse practitioner can do and how they can help them. This can be an overwhelming field for the consumer to understand, therefore providing information and answering all questions is necessary to ensure a smooth process in patient care.
