Total Points: 180; In Momma, directed by Jeffery “J-Squared” Jackson, the relationship between Lemarcus and his mother, Denise, is explored to emphasize the generational and cultural pressures within an African American household (Jackson, 2023). Denise is represented in the short film as a rather assertive and powerful woman who educates her son on becoming a man through lessons of perseverance, obedience, and Hispanic heritage. The film incorporates the aspects of family and cultural norms, though it brings more focus on the struggle that black families undergo coupled with the relationship between a single mother and son.
Through the portrayal of Denise as a tough mother and sound yet poignant dialogue, the filmmaker conveys that the structure that created her is both a shield and a spear. Her strict conduct is couched within the premise of preparing young Black men to withstand the difficult world they live in. This reveals the fact that Denise wants to make Lemarcus strong and immune to adversity in a world where black men are discriminated against and denied the basic rights and privileges that other people enjoy.
Jackson chose to depict the relationship between the African American mother and son to make a broader point on how families continue to fight systemic barriers (Jackson, 2023). It makes emotional strength and self-reliance techniques a means of survival rather than just a way of raising children. Of course, showing that Denise is strong-willed is deliberate, implying that the main character has no choice but to build a wall around herself. Jackson is apt to explain that parenting in these circumstances is moderate and adheres to care and discipline, and Denise is the epitome of this. In this case, the film makes the program audience contemplate how social culture affects personal development and self-sustenance.
In conclusion, Momma conveys a strong message of maternal love, self-identity, and survival through the various characters and subject matter, pointing to the struggles of being a Black man’s mother in America.
