PARENTING ARTICLE SEARCH
As we have learned thus far, media of the early 20th century has played an important role in
spreading ideas for parenting to households across the United States and Europe. Though
Watson’s ideas were not necessarily scientific, his ideas made their way into millions of homes.
Now that technology has changed significantly, more thoughts and ideas are being shared
through many different forms of media.
For this activity you will be asked to go to the library or look on the internet and do a search for
current parenting tips that are being made available to parents. You will want to search different
types of media. As you search answer the following questions:
1. What was the name of the magazine/website, name of the article, & author?
2. What are the credentials of the author? Do they have any?
3. Give a brief summary of the subject or topic being discussed.
4. Who do you think is the target population for the article/magazine/website (besides
parents in general)?
a. Professional parents
b. Working-class parents
c. Minority parents
d. Single parents
5. As the pendulum of parenting swings between permissive and autocratic styles, where
would you rate your source on a scale from 1-10 (1=Permissive, 10=Autocratic)?
6. What is your rational for rating this article as you did?
Write a one-page summary of your findings answering the above questions.
