Part 1 Review the Virtual Field Experience, entitled “Mr. Gregor’s Classroom” and take notes using the “Virtual Field Experience Template.” Read the vignettes on the following pages in your textbooks to address the prompts below: “Teaching for Rational Understanding” (Van de Walle, 2017a, pp. 7–9). “Teaching for Rational Understanding” (Van de Walle, 2017b, pp. 7–12). As you review the video and these vignettes, consider the following reflection questions: —————————————— *Explain how one of these approaches compares to your own personal experiences as a math student. Include examples that reference the use of technology, math tools, applications to the real world, and support of different cultures in your response. How did this influence your thinking and attitude toward math? *What similarities and differences did you notice between the different classrooms? How do the differences affect the learning that takes place? Identify any ideas that challenge your current thinking about mathematics or about teaching and learning mathematics. *What challenges or struggles might be encountered in the different classroom environments, including the online environment? *What technology or digital tools might be used to help address the challenges or struggles? *Rate the teacher using the rubric on the “Virtual Field Experience Template” and provide a rationale and examples to support this rating. *With these classrooms in mind and drawing on information in the readings, post a response to at least two of the reflection questions and ideas above. ——————————————————-/———- Part2 Read the text and visit the websites listed in the resources for Week 1 to learn the content and see examples of inquiry-based and integrated lessons. If you had to pick just one approach to use in your science lesson, would you plan for an inquiry-based lesson or a lesson that integrates other subjects? Why? Provide a rationale regarding whether or not elementary students need to focus on STEM and an interdisciplinary approach to prepare students for the 21st century workforce. Choose one of the lessons from the text or websites from the learning resources (or one of your own). Cite the source. Give a brief explanation of the lesson. Explain what makes the lesson an inquiry-based and interdisciplinary lesson. Suggest a trade book that could be used to enhance the lesson. Also, identify at least one digital tool that could be used to enhance the lesson. Support your response with the learning resources.
