Surveillance System for Nutritional Assessment in a Lower-Middle-Income Country. Nutritional issues encompass the occurrence of undernutrition, stunting, wasting, and micronutrient deficiencies among both children and mother populations.
Target Groups: The priority groups include of pregnant women, breastfeeding moms, newborns, and young children, particularly those residing in rural areas and underserved populations. Assessment methods such as regular anthropometric measures, food surveys, and biochemical tests are utilized to diagnose malnutrition and nutrient deficiencies insufficient consumption of vital vitamins and minerals, including iron, vitamin A, iodine, and zinc, B9, B12 resulting in hindered physical and cognitive growth, heightened vulnerability to infections, and various health complications. Regular interaction within the community: Health clinics, community health workers, and schools have crucial functions in delivering nutrition education and conducting monitoring. Categories of Surveillance System Agencies: Coordination is led by the Ministry of Health, with support from the National Nutrition Council, Sustainable Development Goals SDGs, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and academic institutions. The integration of prevention methods for micronutrient deficiencies, such as food fortification, dietary variety, supplementation, and behavior change communication, guarantees a cost-effective approach to controlling these deficiencies. (Merson, 2020)
Functions of General Rations, Supplementary Feeding, and Therapeutic Feeding Programs: Standard meals are provided to prevent widespread malnutrition, supplementary feeding is aimed at addressing moderate malnutrition, and therapeutic feeding is used to facilitate recovery from severe malnutrition. This holistic strategy seeks to tackle the varied nutritional difficulties faced by the country and successfully enhance the results of maternal and child nutrition. (Bedsaul-Fryer et al., 2023)
