Here is my teacher’s comments: there’s a lot of good material in your essay, but you didn’t quite follow the directions of the prompt and there are some issues here in terms of structure. You start with a clear, specific thesis— great! but you’re supposed to choose one of the 3 modes (intensification, experimentation, communication) and define it according to Holmes and Standen and then show us how Anna Komnene illustrates those elements. You don’t give a definition in the intro, but down near the bottom of the paper, and you don’t choose one, but give all three. More problematic is that you don’t offer any textual evidence, even in the section titled “Robust textual evidence” . What I want to see are specific references to passages in the Alexiad that show the urban dynamism, or multi-centered politics, or whatever.
