There are a number of facets to modern teleology which can contribute to communication ethics, including situationalism, moral and cultural relativism; utilitarianism; social contractarianism; social justice, and Kohlberg’s theories on ethical development. This unit reviews these as options for you to incorporate or adapt to your professional ethical decision making.

Journal:
Each student will be asked to make an ethical decision on a communication case. A decision must be made, and the reasoning for this decision, as entered in the Journal, must be consistent and logical. Generally, this is straight forward: “Yes I will run this picture for the following reasons…”. Answers should be written in a formal style, in complete sentences. One sentence answers will not receive full credit. If the reasoning given contradicts the answers, or if the rational is spurious (“Because I want to” or something equally not-serious), or if the reason does not provide an ethical rationale (“I like the colors”), then the case posting may not receive the full credit. Be specific and provide examples to prove your point.
