Read screenshot 1693 and 1694 then read “Toughest on the Poor”. For an example of the essay I gave you “Reflection Paper 3 – Toughest on the Poor”, which is an example of how you format your essay. Only in Part 2 until Part 5 can you use Chat GPT however part 1 and part 6 is your own take on it so ONLY for part 1 and 6 you must not use Chat GPT.
Part 1
Read Edward Gresser’s classic paper “Toughest on the Poor,” Download “Toughest on the Poor,”which was first published in Foreign Affairs in 2002. The paper is required reading in international business courses across the U.S. in part because the problems identified by the author continue to disproportionately hurt poor people today. The first step in this assignment is to read the essay, then respond to the following questions. (One or two pages is probably sufficient.)
According to the author, how does the US tariff system hurt poor people in the U.S., and how are the poor in other countries hurt?
What compelled US policymakers to create a system that is so harmful to the poor? In other words, how did this system become so unfair?
Ironically, the system fails to achieve its intended goals. How so?
According to the author, why should both parties (Democrats and Republicans) be in favor of fixing this?
Part 2
Identify one issue that stood out to you as particularly surprising or outrageous, and ask your favorite chatbot to write a prompt similar to this:
Edward Gresser has done a lot of research over his career that exposes a fundamental unfairness about the US tariff system. Specifically, the system disproportionately hurts poor people in the U.S. as well as poor exporting companies. In the writing style of (choose between, for example, Newsweek, Politico, Fortune magazine, or the Economist), write a report on the current status of this problem, specifically as it relates to tariffs on (for example, inexpensive shoes and clothing). Provide three specific examples of tariffs today that are disproportionately hurting poor people in the US, and three more examples of tariffs that are disproportionately hurting poor countries.
Part 3
Copy and paste both your prompt and the response you received from the prompt. For the examples, double check them for accuracy by following the links provided in the footnotes.
Part 4
Ask your favorite chatbot to write a follow-up report, in the same writing style as before, on why such an obviously unfair system has not been reformed, and who, today, will likely become the biggest obstacles to reform.
Part 5
Copy and paste both your prompt and the response you received from the prompt. Check it for accuracy by following any links provided.
Part 6
Write a one- or two-paragraph summary of your personal takeaways.
