Clinical Group Teaching Project
This group teaching project will incorporate the communication and teaching threads.
With several of your peers you will present your chosen topic to a group of patients in
the clinical setting. Topics that focus on the concept of Psychosocial Integrity: Stress
and Coping or threads (such as CAM, pharmacology, or safety) are advised as these
are relevant and appropriate for your clinical patient population. Utilizing the nursing
process develop your teaching plan incorporating the evidence-based practice, life
span, and caring threads. Plan your teaching strategies and content on the level of the
patient’s symptoms and the type of psychiatric clinical setting you are in.
Getting Started
Assess your patient population and determine the priority learning need. Discuss this
with your clinical instructor in post conference before choosing your topic. Research the
topic and determine what is feasible to present. Your text, the internet, lecture notes and
information at your clinical site may be utilized.
Written Component
Write 3-4 patient focused objectives/outcomes and then develop a detailed content
outline based on these objectives. The content outline should include the information
you will be presenting, in the order that you will present it. Any props, learning activities
or games that you plan to use should be listed at the end of the outline and must be
approved by the clinical instructor. This document must be submitted to your clinical
instructor the week prior to the presentation for review.
Presentation
As a group you will present the topic to the patients at your clinical site. The time and
length of the presentation will be determined by your clinical site based on the patient
population and constraints of the clinical facility. Typically this is 40 – 50 minutes. Notes
and appropriate props may be used, safety considerations are paramount.
Grading
This clinical group teaching project is worth 5% of your course grade. Each member of
the peer group will receive the same grade based on an equal amount of individual work
from each group member. The clinical instructor has the authority to give individual
grades when the work is not equal within the group. Students are responsible for
informing the instructor when difficulties or inequities are occurring within the group.
