You will be putting the novel in conversation with one of the theoretical readings as well as one other artifact (poem, short story, visual art, etc.) For this response, we’d like you to focus on the theme of “othering” and the concepts of “empire.” For example, you can consider how the “barbarian” girl is further “othered” by her injuries and how torture is a tool of “othering.”
Again, this assignment will allow considerable freedom in terms of how you’d like to approach the prompt, but the assignment should not be thought of as a simple review of the readings, nor as a synopsis of course content.
