You will pick a theory and compare how Nightingale would approach the patient and what your chosen theorist’s approach would be. For example, a post-op patient, how would Orem approach this patient’s care on Day 2 post-op, versus how might Nightingale have approached this patient? You will easily identify similarities and differences.
After learning about various nursing theories students consistently have comments such as, “I have been doing that in my practice for years–I did not know it was from a theory.” Theory is tested in research and applied at the bedside. As you read and learn about nursing theories, see if you can identify with the students before you who have discovered nursing’s theoretical background.
In this Workshop, you will create and present an Infographic. In case you need help, here are a few resources:
Here is a brief explanation of an Infographic: What is an Infographic? (new tab)
There are a couple of places with free Infographic templates you can use. As an IWU student, you have access to Microsoft 365, which has an app called Visio with free Infographic templates. To get there either click the 9 dots in the top left-hand side of your Outlook email page and search for Viso OR open www.Microsoft365.com; log in with your IWU credentials, click the 9 dots in the top left, go to “Explore all Apps,” and find and open Visio.
Alternatively, you can use Canva (new tab), for free Infographic templates.

Review the rubric to make sure you understand the criteria for earning your grade.
Read applicable information on the chosen theory and on Nightingale’s theory.
Create a table comparing Nightingale’s approach with your chosen theory. An infographic is an option for presenting the information instead of the chart, but content is the focus of this assignment. Be sure to compare the two theories and the criteria listed below.
Include a brief synopsis of the theory.
Include a comparison of the two theories identifying similarities and differences:
To what patient scenarios will these theories apply?/ How do you integrate the theory?
How will this new knowledge of theory inform your clinical judgment?

To be eligible for full points you will need to cite and reference at least three scholarly sources.
Submit your initial post by the fourth day of the workshop.
Respond to two peers noting the strengths and weaknesses of each theory by the end of the workshop. Each peer response needs to be at least six developed sentences. e.g., Great job! is not a developed sentence.
